HSBC Premier Credit Card Review

The HSBC Premier Credit Card is a premium offering that targets high-net-worth individuals who frequently travel and prioritise lifestyle benefits. It comes with great rewards for dining, entertainment, and travel. However, its expensive joining and annual fees, along with strict eligibility criteria based on a significant Total Relationship Balance, make it less accessible to the average consumer.

The card's standout features include accelerated rewards on specific categories, free airport lounge access, and comprehensive travel insurance. Before making a decision, it's essential to weigh its benefits against its costs and eligibility requirements. If you're a frequent traveler and value premium lifestyle perks and comfortably meet the eligibility criteria, this card could be a worthwhile investment.

However, if you don't meet the eligibility or prioritise other spending categories, it's advisable to explore alternative credit cards like:

1. HDFC Bank Infinia Credit Card
2. Axis Bank Magnus Credit Card
3. HDFC Diners Club Black Credit Card

HSBC Bank Credit Card News
29 Jun 2024, Saturday
1. RBI imposes Rs 29.6 lakh fine on HSBC for credit card calculation violations

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has fined The Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation Limited (HSBC) Rs 29.6 lakh for failing to adhere to specific credit card operation guidelines.

This action, taken on 24 June 2024, addresses HSBC's non-compliance with the mandated calculation procedures for determining the minimum payment due on credit card accounts. The central issue cited by the RBI is HSBC's calculation method leading to "negative amortization," a situation where a cardholder's balance increases due to the applied interest and fees surpassing the minimum payments made, potentially trapping customers in a debt cycle.

The fine underscores the importance of abiding by RBI's credit card rules, which are designed to prevent debt spirals among users. HSBC customers are advised to review their statements for accuracy in minimum payment calculations and contact customer service for any discrepancies.
